Every indicator is a measuring device with a price tag attached: it tells you something real, and it tells you late. Pick one off the rack and the bench shows what it measures, the settings that are actually standard and who set them, what it pairs with, and the trap. Change the settings chip and the diagram recomputes, because a setting you can only read about is a setting you never really learn.

Where the numbers come from

Divide any Fibonacci number by the next and the answer converges on 0.618. Skip one and you get 0.382, skip two and you get 0.236, and the square root of 0.618 gives 0.786. The whole ladder falls out of one sequence.

The exception is 50%, which is not a Fibonacci ratio at all. It arrived through Dow theory, survived because the middle of a move is a genuine decision point, and every charting package ships it anyway.

How to place it without fooling yourself

Anchor to one obvious, finished swing: the impulse anybody would point at, not the one that makes your idea work. Wick to wick or body to body is a preference, but pick one and keep it, because switching mid-analysis is how a level appears out of nothing.

And if you catch yourself hunting for the swing that drops a line exactly where you already wanted to buy, you have your answer without the tool.

What the evidence actually says

Batchelor and Ramyar (Cass Business School, 2006) tested retracement and projection ratios in the Dow against what chance alone would produce, found no significant difference, and concluded the idea has no scientific rationale behind it. The Socionomics Institute reviewed the same data and read it the other way.

So hold it honestly. The ladder organises a pullback and marks prices a lot of resting orders share, which is not nothing. It is not an edge by itself.

Losses and the gains that undo them are not symmetric. Down 20% needs +25%. Down 50% needs +100%. This curve is the entire argument for small position sizes, and it is pure arithmetic, not opinion.

The one formula that matters

position size = risk dollars ÷ distance to stop

Size from the stop, never from the account balance or from how much you like the idea. If your stop is $2 away and you are risking $200, you buy 100 shares. The instrument changes, the arithmetic does not.

What changed in 2026

The pattern day trader rule is gone. The SEC approved FINRA’s amendments to Rule 4210 on 14 April 2026 and they took effect 4 June 2026, removing the $25,000 minimum equity requirement, the four-trades-in-five-days counter, and the PDT designation itself, replaced by risk-based intraday margin (the ordinary $2,000 margin minimum still applies). Older guides still tell you the rule caps your day trades under $25k. It no longer does, which means the discipline that rule used to impose on small accounts is now entirely yours to supply.
